SecureKey Fixed Indexed Annuities

A Fixed indexed from Brighthouse · reviewed from official materials, July 2026

Brighthouse's principal-protected indexed family: credits floored at zero, caps that are not an annual rate, and a market value adjustment.

The decoder

Reading the quote

A cap that is not an annual rate — above a 0% floor

SecureKey is the buffered family's conservative sibling: "The Index Credit will never be less than zero," so principal is protected from market loss. The cap is the ceiling on each term's credit and — their words — "is not an annual rate." Credits are computed on price-return indices, crediting variants (step, participation, participation-with-spread) shape the upside differently, and withdrawing early meets both a surrender schedule and a market value adjustment tied to Treasury-rate movement.

This is a classic fixed indexed annuity: zero-floor crediting linked to an index, caps and participation rates declared per term and reset within contractual minimums. The optional ReadyPay rider adds a lifetime-income layer — an Income Base times an age-based withdrawal rate — with its own zero-out rules worth reading closely.

The comparison frame from our FIA decoder applies directly: the insurer funds the upside from a bond-plus-options budget, which is why caps move with rates and credited returns historically land in fixed-income territory despite the equity-index label.

The comparison

Against a payment stream

An FIA's return is variable and capped; a payment stream's is fixed and stated. The FIA protects principal and keeps an account value; the stream commits capital to a known schedule at a known estimated yield. One is a hedged savings product, the other is committed income — they answer different questions.

The family mechanics are covered in our Fixed indexed decoder; what the secondary market pays right now is on the current estimated yields page. And because Brighthouse also stands behind payment streams we list, its role as an issuer is profiled on our Brighthouse carrier page.
