How to read the result

Two numbers do most of the work. The effective annual yield is the true annual return that ties the price you pay to the payments you collect, with compounding accounted for. It is the figure to compare across streams, and against a CD, a Treasury, or a new annuity. The weighted average life tells you the average time your capital is committed, weighting each payment by size and timing, which is a more honest read of the horizon than the final payment date alone.

The year-by-year table splits each year's payments into the portion that is yield and the portion that returns your original capital, with the balance still outstanding at each year's end. It is the same shape as a loan amortization, seen from the lender's side, because as the buyer of the stream, that is effectively what you are.

Notice how a later start date or a longer schedule lifts the yield. That is the discount at work, and it is why patient capital is rewarded in this market. For the why behind the numbers, see whether a secondary market annuity is a good investment and where today's live yields by category sit.

Plain-English version: The effective yield is the one number to compare against a CD or a Treasury. The weighted average life tells you, on average, how long your money stays tied up. Both are estimates based on the figures you enter here, not a quote.

Calculator questions

How is the yield on a secondary market annuity calculated?
The yield is the effective annual interest rate that connects the price you pay today to the exact schedule of payments you receive. It is solved as the rate at which the discounted payments equal the purchase price, then expressed as an effective annual rate. This calculator uses the same effective-rate method PSA applies to its listings.
What is weighted average life (WAL)?
Weighted average life is the average time until you receive a dollar of the payments, weighting each payment by its size and how far out it is. A lower WAL means your capital comes back sooner. It is a cleaner measure of a stream's real time horizon than the final payment date, especially for schedules that pay unevenly.
Is the calculator's result a quote?
No. It is an educational estimate based on the numbers you enter, for comparing streams and understanding how price drives yield. It is not an offer, and it does not include any effect of how you hold the asset or its tax treatment. Yields on real listings are shown on each deal. Contact Pacific Structured Assets for live inventory and firm terms.
Why does a longer wait or a later start raise the yield?
Because you buy the stream at a discount, the longer your capital is committed and the later the payments arrive, the larger the discount needed to compensate, which shows up as a higher effective yield. That is why deferred and longer-dated streams tend to price at higher yields than short, near-term ones.
