What you can buy

Guaranteed
The right to receive structured settlement payments paid by a large insurance company such as MetLife or Prudential. Payments are made on a fixed schedule regardless of whether the original payee is living.
Life-Contingent
The right to receive structured settlement payments that continue only while the original payee is living, hedged with a life insurance policy. If the payee passes before the schedule completes, the policy pays a lump sum structured to preserve the investor's estimated yield for the time held.
Lottery Guaranteed
The right to receive scheduled state-lottery prize payments that we originate and assign. Payments are made on a fixed schedule regardless of whether the original payee is living.
Lottery Life-Contingent
The right to receive scheduled state-lottery prize payments that continue only while the original payee is living, hedged with a life insurance policy so the investor's estimated yield is preserved if the payee passes early.
Annuity
Insurance annuities, such as single premium immediate annuities, reassigned to a new owner through a change of ownership or an irrevocable change of payee.

How to read a listing

Here is what each number means

New to these? Here is a plain-English guide to the figures on every available income option, so you can compare them with confidence.

Estimated yield
The effective annual return if you hold the stream through its final scheduled payment, calculated at the listed purchase price. It is an estimate, not a guarantee, and it is not a bank interest rate.
Purchase price
What you pay today to buy the stream. You buy the whole stream, not a share of it, so this is the amount required to reserve it.
Total scheduled payments
The sum of every payment you are scheduled to receive over the life of the stream. The gap between this and the purchase price is your estimated yield.
Payment dates
When each payment is scheduled to arrive. Amounts and dates were fixed in the original settlement, so the schedule is known before you buy.

Guaranteed vs. life-contingent — the label to check first

Guaranteed Payments

Pays its fixed amounts on fixed dates regardless of anyone’s life. The schedule and total are set the day you buy.

Life-Contingent

Pays only while the original annuitant lives. It offers a higher estimated yield to reflect real mortality risk: payments can stop early if the annuitant passes away. Review these carefully before you decide.

Before you invest

Secondary market annuities are long-term holdings with limited liquidity, intended as long-term holdings. There is no daily or public market, though resale or reassignment may be possible with our assistance at a price that is not guaranteed. They are not bank deposits and are not FDIC-insured, and they are not securities registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Payment obligations depend on the financial strength of the issuing insurance carrier. Life-contingent listings depend on the continued life of the original annuitant and carry mortality risk in exchange for their higher yield. Yields shown reflect the effective annual return of the contractual payment stream at the listed purchase price and are not a guarantee of future performance.

Important things to understand before buying

Secondary market annuities can be a strong fit for long-term income, but they are not right for everyone. Please read these points before you decide, and ask our team anything that is unclear.

  • Not a bank deposit, not FDIC-insured, and not bank-guaranteed
  • Not a new annuity contract and not an insurance policy
  • Not a registered security, and not publicly traded
  • Not covered by state guaranty associations, unless separately confirmed by applicable law
  • Limited liquidity: no public market and no daily price
  • Payments depend on the issuing insurance company's claims-paying ability
  • Subject to transaction, document, and court-order risk
  • Life-contingent payments may stop if the measuring life passes away

PSA does not provide tax, legal, investment, accounting, or financial advice, and these payment rights may not be suitable for every investor. Please review any option with your own advisors before deciding.
