Transamerica secondary market annuities

Since 1999 it has been part of Aegon, the Dutch insurance group; a Transamerica-backed stream is the obligation of the issuing Transamerica entity.

What it means
Backed by Transamerica
When a payment stream is backed by Transamerica, the scheduled payments are that carrier's obligation. You are buying the right to receive those payments — transferred through a court-approved process — at a discount, not a new insurance contract, and the difference between what you pay and what you collect is your yield. Read more about the asset itself on our secondary market annuities guide.
Because the income depends on Transamerica continuing to pay, the carrier's financial strength is your protection. These payment rights are not FDIC-insured and generally are not covered by a state guaranty association, so we place only top-rated carriers and show the current rating on every listing. Where a Transamerica-backed stream sits against CDs, Treasuries, and new annuities is laid out on our comparison page.
The company
A brief history
Transamerica traces to early-twentieth-century San Francisco — its pyramid tower is still the city's signature — and its life companies, historically Transamerica Occidental Life and today Transamerica Life Insurance Company, were consistent writers of structured settlement annuities through the market's growth decades.
In 1999, Transamerica was acquired by Aegon, one of Europe's major insurance groups, and its U.S. life operations now issue from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The parent changed; the issuing entities and their obligations did not. A stream on Transamerica paper — whether it says Occidental or not — is owed by the successor Transamerica issuing entity named on the listing.
